NASHVILLE — The Tennessee State women’s basketball team received a 16-point effort from Aaniya Webb and 18 points from its bench, but the Lady Tigers fell 99–43 to unbeaten Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon inside Memorial Gymnasium.
Webb paced TSU (1–5) with 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including a perfect 5-for-6 at the line, while adding three rebounds. Erin Martin delivered one of her strongest outings of the season, finishing with eight points, a team-high five rebounds, and two steals across 28 minutes. Genesis Harris contributed five points and a steal, while Zoe Young added two points and two steals off the bench.
TSU battled on the offensive glass throughout the afternoon, pulling down 10 offensive boards that led to 12 second-chance points. Defensively, the Lady Tigers forced 15 Vanderbilt turnovers, converting those into nine points.
How It Happened
Vanderbilt (6–0) struck quickly, using a string of fastbreak layups and early TSU turnovers to open on a 15–3 run. The Commodores scored 14 points off turnovers in the first quarter alone and shot 61 percent in the frame to take a 31–6 lead after 10 minutes.
TSU continued to search for rhythm in the second quarter. Despite blocks from freshman Laila Lancaster and strong defensive activity from the reserves, Vanderbilt pushed its lead to 56–10 at the break behind 24 first-half points from Mikayla Blakes and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Sacha Washington.
The Lady Tigers opened the third quarter with more energy offensively. Webb knocked down a three, Harris added a triple, and Martin battled for second-chance opportunities as TSU produced 17 points in the period—its most of the game. A 5–0 run midway through the quarter cut the deficit to 68–21 before Vanderbilt answered to hold an 81–27 lead entering the fourth.
TSU’s bench closed strong, scoring nine of the team’s final 16 points in the fourth. Martin sparked a late 7–0 run, highlighted by her jumper with 1:39 remaining. Harris also added a steal-and-score during the closing stretch. The Tigers produced 22 points in the paint for the game and posted 10 fastbreak points.
Vanderbilt was led by Blakes’ 24 points and a near triple-double from freshman point guard Aubrey Galvan, who finished with 16 points, 15 assists, and nine steals.
