Dores stay hot in doubles, Valeria Ray and Sophia Webster each earn singles quarterfinals berth
MASON, Ohio — Vanderbilt women’s tennis advanced into the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals on Sunday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
No. 29 senior Valeria Ray and junior Sophia Webster never trailed in a matchup with Tennessee’s Rinon Okuwaki and Maeve Thornton, claiming the contest 8-5 to reach the doubles semifinals. It was a different story for sophomores Erin Pearce and Mia Yamakita, who faced a deficit for much of the match against Berta Miret and Elena Noguero of Louisville. Down 5-4, the Dore duo rattled off four straight game wins to clinch their spot in the semifinal round with an 8-5 victory.
Ray and Webster were not yet finished on the day, as both secured singles wins following doubles play. No. 14 Ray knocked off Kentucky’s Elena Molla Pons 6-3, 6-3, while Webster netted another Vanderbilt victory over Noguero, 6-2, 6-4. Ray has now made the singles quarterfinals at the regional tournament in each of the last four seasons. It is Webster’s quarterfinal debut in singles after winning the event in doubles last year.
The singles quarterfinals are set to begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. CT (10 a.m. ET) with the doubles semifinals to follow. The tournament overview, entry list, draws, results and more can be accessed via the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship tournament page.
