Vanderbilt basketball defeated Ole Miss, 89-86, in overtime on March 3.
The 22nd-ranked Commodores (23-7, 10-7 SEC) got behind early, trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, but made a run near the end of the half, briefly taking the lead before trailing by four at halftime.
Vanderbilt continued to keep the deficit close in the second half but didn’t take its first lead of the period until there were under six minutes to go. From there, the two teams went back and forth.
The late second half was characterized by a large number of free throws by both squads. The Commodores went over four minutes without a field goal but generated points from the free-throw line.
Down four with 1:08 left in regulation, Duke Miles made a mid-range jumper to cut the deficit to two. Vanderbilt got a turnover and then Duke Miles made another mid-range shot to tie it.
The Commodores challenged for a flagrant foul on an earlier play and were awarded the free throws, with AK Okereke making both. Duke Miles missed his final shot attempt at the buzzer and the game went to overtime.
Holding a two-point lead with less than a minute to go in overtime, Vanderbilt was called for a foul that sent Ole Miss to the line, but the Rebels only made one of two free throws. Jayden Leverett rebounded the second missed free throw.
Tyler Tanner went to the line and made both free throws. Ole Miss missed its final 3-point attempt and Tanner got the steal to seal the win. Tanner finished with 34 points, five rebounds and seven assists.
