Vanderbilt baseball starting pitcher Connor Fennell carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before No. 21-ranked Tennessee’s Blake Grimmer broke it up with a double to left field during the Commodores’ 3-2, 10-inning victory against their in-state foes in the first game of their three-game SEC series at Hawkins Field.
Logan Johnstone’s single with one out in the 10th scored Cade Sears to secure the win.
Fennell allowed two runs, three hits, walked one and struck out nine in 7⅓ innings during which he threw 103 pitches before he was pulled in favor of Luke Guth with a runner on third and one out in the eighth inning.
The Commodores (15-12, 3-4 SEC) struck first in the third inning when catcher Ryker Waite led off with a double and scored on Brodie Johnston’s infield single. They upped their lead to 2-0 on catcher Korbin Reynolds’ solo home run to right field with one out in the fifth inning.
Johnston had four hits and Waite had two.
Tennessee starter Brandon Arvidson allowed two runs, four hits, two walks and struck out seven in five innings before Tegan Kuhns replaced him. Arvidson started the game in Kuhns’ stead for the Vols (18-8, 3-4). After Grimmer’s double, Henry Ford hit a screaming single to left field to put Vols on first and third with one out. Grimmer scored on a double-steal attempt for the Vols’ first run of the game in the sixth.
Manny Marin’s leadoff single in the top of the eighth, coupled with an errant pickoff attempt and a sacrifice bunt, put him on third base with one out before Luke Guth gave up an RBI single to Levi Clark that tied the game 2-2. Brennan Seiber relieved Guth with one out and a runners on first and second and induced Ford to ground into an inning-ending double play to keep the scored tied.
The Vols had runners on first and third with two outs after Jay Abernathy walked and Levi Clark singled to left field but Vanderbilt reliever Brennan Seiber struck out Blake Grimmer to end the inning.

But the Commodores came up empty after Holcomb was caught stealing second to end the inning after the previous two hitters struck out.
