    In this story:
FAYETTEVILLE — The most revealing number from Arkansas’ loss to Tennessee was not the final score. It was 9.5. That was the average distance the Razorbacks needed to gain on third down, a statistic that explains why so many possessions ended with frustration instead of progress.
Arkansas finished 2-for-11 on third down. But focusing only on the conversion rate misses the larger problem. The Razorbacks repeatedly reached the decisive snap with too much left to do, then asked KJ Jackson and an inconsistent offense to rescue the possession.
Vanderbilt week needs to begin before third down arrives. Arkansas must create situations in which ordinary execution is enough. An offense cannot keep requiring an exceptional play to accomplish something as basic as staying on the field.
Third down receives the attention because it delivers the verdict. First and second down often establish the conditions. When the opening play gains little, the next call becomes more important. When the second snap also fails, the defense can prepare for a conversion attempt that requires substantial yardage.
That leaves Arkansas little room for a useful but modest gain. A completion can be accurately thrown and still finish short. A run can find available space without finding enough. The offense may need protection to hold longer because an immediate throw does not necessarily solve the problem.
The Razorbacks need more possessions in which a productive play remains productive. That should influence the early-down plan against Vanderbilt. Arkansas can pursue explosive opportunities without making every drive dependent on hitting one.
There is nothing timid about creating a manageable third down. Four or five yards can change what the defense must respect on the next snap. Arkansas needs to stop putting itself in situations where those gains barely matter.
Jackson completed 15-of-27 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown against Tennessee. Those numbers do not establish that Arkansas must suddenly become a pass-first team. They show the need for a more dependable passing contribution within an offense that helps its quarterback.
Throwing more is not automatically throwing better. If Jackson is repeatedly asked to pass when the defense expects it, Arkansas makes his assignment harder before the snap. The protection becomes more demanding, and the defense has fewer reasons to hesitate.
The passing plan needs a clear relationship between the call, the protection and the receiving options. Jackson must understand where the available completion is likely to appear and what changes when the defense removes it. That clarity is especially important when the offense falls behind schedule.
Arkansas also needs to value completions that improve the next situation. Not every throw has to transform the game. Sometimes its job is to keep the possession functioning. The Razorbacks need more of those plays before the drive becomes a rescue operation.
Arkansas showed against Tennessee that its rushing attack could generate momentum. The next assignment is maintaining that usefulness after the opponent adjusts. A productive stretch is a foundation, not permission to assume the same approach will work indefinitely.
If Vanderbilt commits more attention to the run, Arkansas needs a passing answer ready. If the Commodores prioritize coverage, the Razorbacks must be willing to take the available rushing yardage. The offense needs to punish the defense’s choice rather than remain attached to its own preferred call.
That is meaningful balance. It does not require an equal division of runs and passes. It requires both to remain credible options, with each helping create opportunities for the other.
Tim Cramsey must preserve that connection throughout the game. Arkansas cannot have one identity during its best stretch and another, less dependable identity once the defense responds. The Razorbacks need a counter, not merely a good opening idea.
The Tennessee loss produced another argument about Arkansas’ late punt. But fourth-and-10 while trailing by seven was already an unfavorable position. The debate over what to do next should not hide the offensive work that created the predicament.
Arkansas needs better circumstances before it needs a different decision. That means useful early-down gains, fewer predictable passing situations and conversion calls the staff has reason to trust. Confidence should develop during the game, not become a desperate requirement in the final minutes.
Vanderbilt provides another opportunity to change that pattern. The Razorbacks do not need to look fearless while attempting unlikely conversions. They need to make ordinary first downs feel ordinary again.
If Arkansas reaches another fourth quarter needing nearly 10 yards every time a possession matters, the problem will not be a mystery. The warning is already there and Saturday must bring the response.
