Nashville, Tenn. – Ole Miss dominated Vanderbilt, 52-17, in Music City Saturday afternoon. The Rebels responded to their loss at Florida two weeks ago in a big way, though there is always room for improvement.
Let’s take a look at the game.
Ole Miss won the toss and elected to receive first in Nashville. The Rebels opened with three consecutive pass plays, but the possession still ended in a quick three-and-out. Now the defense had to show its work, and it did, forcing a three-and-out of its own.
Ole Miss then put together a drive. Trinidad Chambliss found Horatio Fields for a 14-yard gain before connecting with Deuce Alexander for another 15 yards. Kewan Lacy was back, and he showed it with a massive 19-yard run. A Vanderbilt pass-interference penalty moved the Rebels to the 10-yard line, setting up Chambliss to barrel and spin his way into the end zone. The Rebels quickly delivered a reminder of what their offense could do, but Vanderbilt soon got its only points of the half.

Jared Curtis drove the Commodores downfield, starting with a 15-yard completion to Junior Sherrill and a 34-yard reception by Ja’Cory Thomas. Curtis also found Cole Spence for a 27-yard gain that put Vanderbilt inside the Ole Miss 10. However, a 15-yard personal-foul penalty on Clinton Azubuike pushed the Commodores back, giving the Rebels’ defense a chance to respond. Antonio Kite broke up a pass, and Suntarine Perkins followed with a sack, helping hold Vanderbilt to a 45-yard field goal. That made it 7-3 with 7:10 remaining in the first quarter, but Ole Miss answered with a 35-0 run to close the half.
On the next drive, Lacy punched in a two-yard rushing touchdown, reminding everyone he hadn’t gone quietly into the night. His score extended the lead to 14-3, but Chambliss and the defense helped lead the way from there.

Then it was time for a big-man touchdown. Chambliss found defensive lineman Jamarious Brown in the end zone for a two-yard touchdown pass, capping a 15-play, 63-yard drive. Ole Miss led 21-3 with 9:09 remaining in the second quarter.

Next, it was the defense’s turn to make a big-time play. Curtis slung a pass that found its way into Antonio Kite’s hands for an interception. Chambliss looked a bit shaky on the ensuing drive before finding Caleb Cunningham for a massive 22-yard gain on third-and-17, helping the Rebels overcome an earlier holding penalty. QB1 then connected with Alexander for a 39-yard touchdown. Ole Miss led 28-3 with 4:41 left in the half.

A couple of drives later, Ole Miss scored 14 points in 20 seconds. Blake Purchase got a big sack on Curtis, forcing a fumble that Perkins recovered and returned five yards for a touchdown with 43 seconds remaining. Ole Miss then regained possession following the ensuing kickoff, setting the offense up at Vanderbilt’s nine-yard line. After a five-yard run by Makhi Frazier, Chambliss found Michael Smith for a four-yard touchdown with 23 seconds left. The Rebels headed into halftime with a commanding 42-3 lead.

Vanderbilt opened the second half with a score as Curtis and company drove downfield on a possession that took more than seven minutes. Curtis found Thomas for a 13-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 42-10. The Commodores’ defense intercepted Chambliss on the Rebels’ next drive, and Ole Miss struggled to regain its first-half offensive rhythm. It was a reminder that sustaining a performance through all four quarters remains an area to improve. The Rebels went scoreless in the third quarter, but Nick Cull’s interception late in the period gave them possession heading into the fourth.

Lucas Carneiro’s 42-yard field goal opened the fourth-quarter scoring for Ole Miss. With 8:20 remaining, Shekai Mills-Knight exploded for a 35-yard touchdown run, stretching the lead to 52-10. Vanderbilt added one more touchdown in the closing minute, but the Rebels got back on track with a convincing 52-17 win.
