OXFORD —A chance to build some late-season momentum slipped away from Ole Miss basketball.
No. 22 Vanderbilt beat the Rebels 89-86 in overtime on March 3 at the Sandy and John Black Pavilion.
Ole Miss forced overtime with a defensive stand. Vanderbilt guard Duke Miles missed a potential game-winning layup at the end of regulation. Vanderbilt guard Tyler Tanner made two clutch free throws with 16.3 seconds remaining in overtime to help ice the game.
The Rebels (12-18, 4-13 SEC) are back in a slide after winning against Auburn on Feb. 28 to end a 10-game losing streak. The result helps the Commodores (23-7, 10-7) keep seeding position in the NCAA Tournament. Vanderbilt entered the game projected as a No. 5 seed, according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.
Tanner led the Commodores with 34 points. Patton Pinkins led Ole Miss with 16.
Ole Miss Forward Malik Dia has fouled out in an odd way. He shot free throws with 26 seconds remaining but, during a review, he was assessed a flagrant foul. It was his fifth.
Vanderbilt could not make a shot to win the game and the Rebels are headed to overtime. Duke Miles missed a potential game-winning layup.
Malik Dia converted a three-point play after being fouled on a layup. The made free throw puts Ole Miss up 74-70 with 1:17 remaining.
The Rebels and Commodores are tied at 68 with 2:48 remaining. Ilias Kamardine and Patton Pinkins are tied for a team high in Ole Miss points with 13. Tyler Tanner leads Vanderbilt with 23.
AJ Storr converted an and-one with 8:41 remaining. It puts Ole Miss up 60-54.
The Rebels are up 37-33 at the break. Ilias Kamardine leads Ole Miss with 10 points.
The Rebels were up 12 with 13:33 remaining in the first half, but the lead has dwindled to 26-23 with 5:38 remaining.
Vanderbilt guard Tyler Tanner has made his last five shots and is up to 11 points.
Ole Miss leads 17-6 with 12:29 remaining in the first half. The Rebels have forced two turnovers and held the Commodores to 2-for-14 shooting.
The Rebels got up 8-0 on Vanderbilt behind 3-pointers from Ilias Kamardine and Malik Dia.
