NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt women’s basketball guard Mikayla Blakes likes being the first sophomore since A’ja Wilson in 2016 to win Southeastern Conference player of the year.
“She’s historic,” Blakes said Wednesday of the AP female athlete of the year in 2025 and four-time WNBA MVP. “She’s killing the WNBA. She’s done college as well. Just to know I’m on a path of a GOAT, it’s insane.”

Nikola Jokic had 16 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds for his 25th triple-double of the season, and the Denver Nuggets beat the Houston Rockets 129-93 in a Western Conference showdown Wednesday night. Jamal Murray scored 30 points for Denver, which holds the tiebreaker over the Rockets after winning the season series 3-1. The Nuggets moved within a half-game of Houston in the bunched-up Western Conference standings. It was the first time since mid-November Denver has won with its opening-night lineup together. Jokic completed his 187th career triple-double with his 10th rebound with 4:14 left in the third. It is the 15th time this season he has secured a triple-double before the fourth quarter.

Caitlin Clark made a triumphant return from an injury in her U.S. senior national team debut, finishing with 17 points and 12 assists as the Americans beat Senegal 110-46 on Wednesday in the FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament. Clark sustained a right groin injury in a WNBA game for the Indiana Fever in July and hadn’t played since then. The former Iowa star averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds in just 13 games in her short second season after starting her pro career by being named rookie of the year. She was back in rhythm Wednesday, helping the Americans shoot 58.7% from the field and 54.8% from 3-point range.
Maxx Crosby has expressed his commitment to the Las Vegas Raiders a day after the proposed trade that was supposed to send him to Baltimore was called off because he failed a physical. The Ravens backed out of the trade on Tuesday night after Crosby came to Baltimore for a physical. Crosby posted on social media Wednesday night, saying “everything happens for a reason” and that he is a “Raider.” The relationship between Crosby and the Raiders had soured late last season when the team shut him down against his wishes with two games left to have surgery on his injured knee.
Nijel Pack scored 24 points, shooting 5 for 10 from 3-point range, and Oklahoma beat South Carolina 86-74 in an opening-round game of the SEC Tournament. The 11th-seeded Sooners advance to play sixth-seeded Texas A&M. Kobe Knox scored 20 points for South Carolina. South Carolina built a 29-19 in the game’s first 10 minutes and the Gamecocks led 39-28 after Kobe Knox made a 3-pointer with 5:24 before halftime. Down the stretch, the Sooners outscored South Carolina 14-3 to tie it at 42 at halftime. Oklahoma emerged from the break continuing its offensive spurt and outscored the Gamecocks 13-5 in the first five minutes of the second half and led 56-47. Oklahoma led by double digits for the final 7:53.
Defending champion Jack Draper beat five-time champ Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7) Wednesday night in the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open. The 24-year-old Draper, who is coming back after missing eight months due to an arm injury, advanced to the quarterfinal round and will face Daniil Medvedev, who beat Alex Michelsen 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 16 to advance.
Led by Niccolo Moretti’s 19 points, the No. 7 seed Florida Atlantic Owls defeated the 10th-seeded Temple Owls 63-59 in the American Athletic Conference Tournament. FAU (18-14) plays No. 6 seed North Texas in the second round Thursday.
RJ Godfrey had 11 points and eight rebounds and Clemson rode a red-hot first half to a 71-62 victory over Wake Forest to reach the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. Fifth-seeded Clemson launched 13 3-pointers in the first 12-plus minutes, making seven of them en route to a 29-18 lead. The Tigers finished the first half 9 for 18. The Tigers led 41-23 at halftime. Clemson led by 16 with seven minutes remaining, but Wake Forest got within eight points while the Tigers were missing nine straight shots and Godfrey missed the front end of the 1-and-1 three times in a row. Ace Buckner ended the drought with a layup and the Tigers made six free throws in the final 64 seconds to finish it off.

David Punch had 26 points, Tanner Toolson scored 19 and sixth-seeded TCU rallied for a 95-88 victory over No. 14 seed Oklahoma State on Wednesday night in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday night. The Horned Frogs also got 14 points and 11 rebounds from Xavier Edmonds in advancing to play third-seeded and No. 14 Kansas in the quarterfinals on Thursday night. Anthony Roy had 25 points and nine rebounds for the Cowboys, while Christian Coleman had 15 points and Kanye Clary had 14.
Jalen Brunson scored 28 points, Jordan Clarkson had 27 and the New York Knicks rallied to beat the Utah Jazz 134-117 on Wednesday night to snap a two-game losing streak. Brunson also had eight assists and three steals in a game the Knicks trailed 49-31 early in the second quarter. OG Anunoby added 22 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. New York made 17 3-pointers and shot 52% from the field. Brice Sensabaugh led Utah with 29 points. Ace Bailey added 21. Utah made 11 of its first 13 3-pointers to take the early lead.

Rutgers beats Minnesota 72-67 in the Big Ten Tournament behind a huge night from Tariq Francis. On Wednesday, Francis scores 29 points and drills five 3-pointers as the 14th-seeded Scarlet Knights knock out the 11th seed. Jamichael Davis hits a late 3 that puts Rutgers ahead for good. Rutgers then closes on a 17-5 run and stays perfect at the free-throw line down the stretch. Emmanuel Ogbole adds 10 points and seven rebounds. Rutgers also sets a program tournament record with 10 made threes. Cade Tyson leads Minnesota with 24 points.

Ivan Demidov broke a tie with 7:20 left, Jacob Fowler made 32 saves and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Wednesday night for their third straight victory. Demidov scored off Alex Newhook’s rebound and Montreal held on a night after beating Toronto 3-1 at home. Juraj Slafkovsky and Alexandre Texier also scored for Montreal, with Demidov assisting on Slafkovsky’s power-play goal in the first period. Texier tied it at 2 on a wraparound with 2:31 left in the second. Drake Batherson scored twice for Ottawa. Linus Ullmark stopped 20 shots.
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Dodgers will likely make the traditional post-championship visit to the White House again this year, but it won’t happen during their only scheduled visit to Washington D.C.
Trey Murphy III scored 28 points, Dejounte Murray added 27 and the New Orleans Pelicans beat the Toronto Raptors 122-111, spoiling Brandon Ingram’s return to the city where he played for six seasons. Murray had his highest-scoring game since his return from a torn right Achilles tendon that sidelined him for more than a year. Zion Williamson added 19 points for the Pelicans, who have won seven of 10. Ingram scored 22 points in his first game at New Orleans since he was traded to Toronto last year. The Raptors have lost six of eight.
Desmond Bane had a 3-pointer and two free throws in the final 17.4 seconds to cap a 35-point night and help the Orlando Magic hold off the Cleveland Cavaliers 128-122 on Wednesday for their fifth straight victory. Paolo Banchero added 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Magic. Tristan da Silva scored nine of his 23 points in the fourth quarter. James Harden had 30 points and eights assists for Cleveland. Donovan Mitchell added 25 points, hitting a 3-pointer that brought the Cavaliers within two after Orlando led by 13 midway through the fourth quarter. Bane countered with a 3-pointer as he was falling out of bounds with 17.4 seconds left, then added two free throws with eight seconds remaining.
A day later than expected, the United States has punched its ticket to the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic. The Americans got the help they needed from Italy, which beat Mexico 9-1 on Wednesday night. Italy beat the U.S. 8-6 a night earlier, turning the Americans into spectators as they hoped to avoid elimination. The Italians won Group B with a 4-0 record. The U.S. was runner-up in the group at 3-1. Mexico was eliminated, having also lost to the U.S. The Americans will stay in Houston to meet Canada on Friday night. Italy will play Puerto Rico in the other quarterfinal at Daikin Park on Saturday.

Travis Konecny and Trevor Zegras scored in the second period and the Philadelphia Flyers rallied to beat the Washington Capitals 4-1. Washington has lost four of its last five games and is tied with Philadelphia at 71 points. Both teams are seven points behind Boston in the race for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Jamie Drysdale and Owen Tippett also scored for Philadelphia. Ryan Leonard scored off a pass from Alex Ovechkin for Washington.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Wednesday spelled coach Bobby Hurley’s final game after 11 seasons at Arizona State, but he was ready to depart with his head held high.
Former Michigan linebackers coach Chris Partridge is suing the university, its board of regents and its athletics director for firing him in 2023. The federal lawsuit filed Wednesday says he was unjustifiably terminated. Partridge was fired while the NCAA investigated allegations of in-person scouting and sign-stealing. The lawsuit says the school violated his Fourteenth Amendment right to due process. Michigan did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press requesting comment. The Big Ten declined to comment on the lawsuit.
Lionel Messi was held scoreless and Inter Miami and Nashville SC played to a scoreless draw in the teams’ first game in the CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16 on Wednesday night. The teams will meet again on March 18 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale to decide which squad advances to the quarterfinal round. Entering the contest, Messi had scored in six straight games against Nashville, dating to April 20, 2024, posting 12 goals and five assists in that stretch.
Texas came to Music City needing at least a victory to bolster its NCAA Tournament resume. The Longhorns’ former coach put a dent into those hopes Wednesday night. Chris Beard led Mississippi to a 76-66 victory over Texas on Wednesday night in the Southeastern Conference Tournament. Beard was fired as coach of the Longhorns in 2023, midway through his second season. He was hired by Ole Miss shortly thereafter. Beard says his team is in “survive-and-advance mode” after a rough season. Texas is 18-14 and hoping to get a spot in the March Madness bracket.
BALTIMORE — General manager Eric DeCosta put out his narrative on Wednesday, a response in damage control.
The No. 9 seed Tulane Green Wave defeated the eighth-seeded Memphis Tigers 81-69 in the American Athletic Conference Tournament led by Rowan Brumbaugh’s 35 points. Tulane (18-14) plays No. 5 seed Charlotte in the second round Thursday. Memphis (13-19) lost eight straight to end the season.
NEW YORK — Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, treasurer Jonathan Tisch and board director Laurie Tisch have asked the NFL’s finance committee to approve a transfer of their remaining interest in the organization to their children’s trusts.
Robert McCray V scored 30 points and Florida State continued its winning ways beating California 95-89 in the second round of the ACC Tournament. The eighth-seeded Seminoles advance to play top-seeded Duke on Thursday in the quarterfinals. Dai Dai Ames scored 27 points for Cal which now sweats its potential NCAA Tournament berth fate until Selection Sunday. Cal had its best success within the first four minutes darting to a 9-2 lead before the Seminoles took control. Florida State went on a on a 13-4 run and took the lead for good on a MaGee 3-pointer with 12:13 before halftime.
Nasir Whitlock scored 18 points, Joshua Ingram and Edouard Benoit each added 15, and second-seeded Lehigh beat No. 4 seed Boston University 74-60 to win the Patriot League Tournament and clinch its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2012. Hank Alvey added 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks for Lehigh (18-16). Ingram hit a 3-pointer and Whitlock followed with a step-back jumper to make it 13-12 and the Mountain Hawks led the rest of the way. Ben Defty made 8 of 11 from the field and finished with 21 points and eight rebounds for BU (17-17).

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — When N.C. State and Pittsburgh stepped onto the Spectrum Center court in Charlotte on Wednesday, the two programs were in desperately different positions.
Nick Martinelli scored 28 points, Jake West added 18 and 15th-seeded Northwestern knocked off No. 10-seed Indiana 74-61 on the second day of the Big Ten Tournament. The Wildcats trailed 37-36 at halftime then held cold-shooting Indiana to 24 points in the second half. Northwestern now has a seven-game winning streak against the Hoosiers. Martinelli made 5 of 7 shots early in the second half while Indiana was mired in a 2-for-11 shooting slump, leading to a 57-47 Northwestern lead with 10 minutes remaining. Jordan Clayton made one free throw for a 70-52 Wildcats lead with about 5 1/2 minutes left. Both teams limped home from there, with the Wildcats missing their last seven shots and Indiana making only 1 of 4 down the stretch. Northwestern plays Purdue on Thursday.
