Vanderbilt Men’s basketball continues preparing for the season with a scrimmage against Alabama Birmingham. The Commodores came out on top 97-65 against the Blazers.
The Commodores were powered by their guards, Tanner, Glass, and Brown Jr. All three of them had excellent games, as Brown Jr. picked up a double-double in points and assists. The Dores’ also dominated on the glass, picking up many offensive rebounds, an area they struggled with last season.
The game was characterized by constant substitutions for both teams, as each coach wants to get their players warmed up for the season ahead.
Byington sent out Tyler Tanner, Ace Glass, Chandler Bing, Berke Büyüktuncel, and Sebastian Williams-Adams to start off the game.
First Half
Vanderbilt wins the opening tip, but fails to convert their opening possession after a late missed three by Büyüktuncel. Both teams start slow on their first possessions before a second-chance three by Glass opens up the scoring, with Bing recovering a strong offensive rebound. Tanner creates another two points through a steal and layup. UAB then started to pick up, scoring two free throws along with an offensive rebound and floater by Antallah Sandlin-El. Byington then subbed in Bangkot Dak, who drained a contested mid-range shot on his first possession before the media timeout, giving the Commodores a 7-5 lead.
The Blazers came out of the timeout by scoring 1 of two shots from the line. Tanner then found a hole in the defense and put through another layup. After a couple of missed threes, Ant Brown Jr. made a great pass to Dak in the paint for an easy layup. Both teams made strong layups before Brown Jr. again found impact with a steal and layup. UAB answered back with a three, making it 15-12 Vanderbilt.
After a missed three, Tanner took the ball away and drew a foul on the layup attempt. He made the first but missed the second, and Glass got the board. Another missed shot was followed by another offensive rebound by Büyüktuncel, who was followed by another foul drawn by Glass. Glass hit both free throws. Vanderbilt continued a strong full-court press defense that put pressure on the Blazers to get the ball upcourt. After a turnover by Vanderbilt and airballed a three by UAB, Vandy took control with another drawn foul and strong dunk by Williams-Adams on a great assist by Büyüktuncel to give them a strong lead before UAB took their first timeout.
Both teams took their turns missing shots before Dak went to his left hand for another strong finish. After another offensive rebound, Tanner cashed in from three on the Commodores’ next possession. Heading into the media timeout, the Commodores held a 27-15 lead.
The Commodores came out of the break with back-to-back steals by Tanner, but could not convert on either of their possessions. However, after a third steal by Dak, Tanner found Williams-Adams for a huge dunk in transition. UAB finally cashed in after an airballed three and block by Dak. Vanderbilt struck back next possession with a three from brown jr. UAB converted another layup before Brown Jr. struck again, making a deep contested shot from behind the arc, keeping the Commodores’ offense hot. A layup by Leverett ,assisted by Brown Jr. A transition dunk by Dak forced UAB to take another timeout, with the score at 40-20.
The timeout seemed to jump-start UAB, as they came out of the half with 5 consecutive points, including an and-one jump shot by Jones. After both teams had layups blocked, the Commodores scored another 3 points as both Williams-Adams and Bing both drew fouls on layups. With both teams implementing a full-court press, UAB struck back with a three-pointer to cut the lead to 15 before Williams-Adams made another free throw after a shooting foul. Tanner had yet another steal before Bing went 1-for-2 from the line after a shooting foul. UAB had the last shot, but missed a deep three to send the game to halftime with the Commodores up 48-30.
Second Half
The Blazers started the half off with the ball, and after a couple of possessions, scored first on a three from Antallah Sandlin-El. Tyler Tanner answered back with a three of his own before Glass also drained one from behind the arc. Jeremy Elyzee scored an and-one for UAB before they entered a press defense. They forced a turnover before Elyzee drew another foul but missed both free throws. After two turnovers, Elyzee made a creative layup to make the score 55-38 at the break.
UAB capitalized on two Vanderbilt turnovers, making both a layup and a three-pointer. Brown Jr. answered rapidly with a quick layup and a huge alley-oop pass to Dak. Brown Jr. picked up another assist on a great pass to Williams-Adams for a three. Dak threw down another one after another dime from Brown Jr. UAB answered after Jones hit a nice step-back three, but Tyler Tanner gave it right back, hitting a step-back three of his own to make the score 70-48.
Both teams traded two pointers, and after a couple of missed shots, Leverett drew a foul on a rebound. After some confusion on the play, Dak ended up with a dunk on a missed free throw. After a Vanderbilt turnover, UAB drew a foul but could only make 1 free throw of the two. Vanderbilt then scored another two on a layup by Glass before scoring another 3 points from the line on drawn fouls. A couple of possessions later Brown Jr. found Büyüktuncel in the lane for a dunk to extend the Commodores’ lead to 33 (90-57).
UAB scores another free throw and bucket before Leverett gets his own miss and floats one in. UAB scores another 3 free throws in 4 attempts before a dunk by Leverett and a dribble-cross-up three by Matthew Hawkins. The game ends after an unsportsmanlike steal as the Commodores tried to dribble out the clock by UAB to get one last bucket, making the final score 97-65.
The Commodores finish their exhibition slate this Friday, Oct. 23rd in Coral Gables against Miami.
