FOOTBALL RECRUITING
Maury junior cornerback Matt Williams revealed his commitment this week to Vanderbilt.
The 6-foot, 160-pounder was instrumental in last season’s Class 5 state championship for Maury. He chose coach Clark Lea’s team over programs such as Maryland, Duke and reigning national champion Indiana, according to reporter Riley Alberts.
COLLEGE WOMEN’S GOLF
Old Dominion sophomore Barbara Car won the Sun Belt Conference individual championship with a 7-under-par 209 for 54 holes in Point Clear, Alabama. She also helped the Monarchs be one of the four teams to advance to match play among the 13 schools.
Car rattled off six birdies Wednesday, including four on the front nine, for a 6-under 66. That tied her career best round versus par, and she beat South Alabama’s Lilain Buehle and Louisiana Monroe’s Daniela Campillo Martinez by two strokes.
Trailing ULM (7-over 871), South Alabama (880) and Texas State (881), ODU and Coastal Carolina tied at 882, necessitating a one-hole playoff. The Monarchs won that and will face ULM in a semifinal Thursday morning, with the victor advancing to the title match Thursday afternoon.
COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL
Virginia Tech announced the signing of Oklahoma transfer Kuol Atak, a redshirt sophomore forward from Haltom City, Texas. The 6-foot-9, 192-pounder averaged 7.0 points and 1.2 rebounds in 2025-26, shooting 46.5% from the field, including 41.3% from 3-point range.
COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Virginia gained a commitment from former VCU standout Mary-Anna Asare. She played in just seven games in 2025-26 because of injury but averaged more than 17 points in them.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Virginia Wesleyan, the top-ranked team in Division III, improved to 39-0 with a 9-0, 12-3 sweep at Salisbury (18-12).
In Game 1, Hannah Hearl pitched a two-hitter. Taylor McQueen had two RBIs, Morgan Tucker and Alison Pollack both hit home runs during a four-run sixth, and Karley Beltran was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.
In Game 2, Emma Adams pitched a five-inning complete game. She was 3 for 4 with a run and three RBIs, as was Tucker. Olivia Knight was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs. She homered, as did Adams. Taylor McQueen was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.
Liberty (23-23) upended No. 13 Virginia Tech 10-9, surviving a five-run bottom of the ninth by the Hokies (38-9), who have lost three consecutive games.
Ella Fox, Savannah Jessee, Alexia Carrasquillo and Paige Doerr all had two hits for the Flames. Brynn McManus scored twice.
Jordan Lynch paced Tech by batting 3 for 3 and scoring twice. Nora Abromavage and Rachel Castine, a senior from Greenbrier Christian Academy, each hit two-run homers, and Zoe Yaeger had a triple and two RBIs.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Three players for No. 10 Virginia were named national award semifinalists.
The selections are headlined by Lucas Hartman on the National Pitcher of the Year and Stopper of the Year lists. Tyler Kapa joins Hartman on the Stopper of the Year list, while Eric Becker landed on the Brooks Wallace Award list for the top shortstop in the country.
WRESTLING
Patrick McMillan, who became Green Run’s first state wrestling champion since 1993, committed to Appalachian State. The 215-pound senior came back from numerous medical issues to earn a shot with the Mountaineers.
COLLEGE WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Virginia (8-9) will see its NCAA Tournament-qualifying streak end at 29 years after falling 11-9 in an ACC quarterfinal in Charlotte to Syracuse, which is seeded fourth in the tournament and ranked sixth nationally. UVA is fifth-seeded and 20th-ranked.
Megan Rocklein and Fiona Allen scored twice each for the Cavaliers. Emma Muchnik netted four goals for the Orange, who will face top-seeded North Carolina in a semifinal.
No. 21 Christopher Newport’s Hadley Chadwick was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, and teammate Faith O’Connor was the Offensive Player of the Week for the first time this year.
Chadwick totaled 17 saves in a pair of wins last week (14-11 against Randolph-Macon and 11-9 versus Mary Washington), and O’Connor had seven draw controls, 10 goals and three assists in that span.
COLLEGE TENNIS
On the eve of the tournament in Cary, North Carolina, Yana Klimchuk of regular-season co-champion Norfolk State was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women’s Rookie of the Year, as voted by the league’s head coaches.
NSU’s Regina Urbiola and Yuliya Yorkova made the first team, and Klimchuk was on the second team.
On the men’s side, Norfolk State’s Szymon Malecki made the All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference first team. The Spartans’ Marcin Andrzejczak and Dominik Simunovic were on the second team.
CNU freshman Nathan Russell was named the men’s C2C Player of the Week. Against No. 8 Johns Hopkins, he teamed with Rainer Christiansen for a 6-3 doubles win on line 3 and beat regionally ranked Chakor Rajendra 6-4, 7-6 on singles line 2. Russell has 12 singles victories and 11 doubles wins for the season.
Mary Washington junior Addison Felts, a Maury High graduate, was named the women’s C2C Player of the Week. She went 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 3-0 at No. 1 doubles with Natalie Kim for the 25th-ranked Eagles in triumphs against Rhodes, Berry and Sewanee.
COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD
CNU’s Ashley Eley was the women’s C2C Field Athlete of the Week. She set a personal record by clearing 1.63 meters, the third-highest in Captains history, at the New Captains Classic.
Along with PRs in the javelin (24.20 meters), shot put (8.85 meters) and long jump (5.33 meters), Eley posted a score of 4,231 in the heptathlon, putting her 35th on the national Division III leaderboard.
CNU’s Dylan Filipowicz was the men’s Field Athlete of the Week. He won the New Captains Classic javelin throw at 61.25 meters, the longest throw by a Captain since 1977, and elevated him to 14th on the current D-III chart.
