Do Arkansas’ Coaches Have the Edge at Vanderbilt? Make Me Believe It. – Sports Illustrated

Needing a win does not give Arkansas a coaching advantage. Neither does believing the Razorbacks ought to beat Vanderbilt. The staff has to create that advantage. It comes from preparation that fits the players, adjustments that arrive in time and decisions that make sense for the game actually being played.
That is what I will be judging Saturday. Not which sideline sounds more confident during the week. Not which program wins a comparison built on assumptions about its name or resources. Arkansas has an opening. I want to see whether its coaches can use it.
The question is not whether Tim Cramsey can call a good drive. It is whether the offense knows where to go after Vanderbilt takes away what made that drive work.
Arkansas needs the run and pass helping each other. If the Commodores commit additional attention to the ground game, the Razorbacks should have a response ready. If Vanderbilt prioritizes coverage, Arkansas needs to take the rushing yards available without becoming impatient.
The season average of 99 rushing yards per game makes it difficult to assume the ground game can carry the afternoon. Jackson should not be expected to compensate for every unsuccessful early down, either.
The plan has to connect those realities. Arkansas needs calls that fit together rather than individual ideas that occasionally produce something good. I will be watching whether the offense retains its purpose when circumstances change.
That is where a promising stretch either becomes a dependable performance or begins drifting toward another difficult finish.
Curtis threw two interceptions against Ole Miss. He also threw for 222 yards. Arkansas needs to prepare for the entire quarterback, not select whichever part of that line makes the matchup sound easiest.
The Razorbacks should make his decisions uncomfortable without providing an escape from the problem. That means a rush that keeps its shape and coverage that remains attached when the play lasts longer than expected. Silverfield has acknowledged Curtis’ ability to escape. That recognition needs to become clear responsibilities on the field.
Vanderbilt has struggled to score in SEC play. Arkansas should make the Commodores solve those problems rather than supply a missed assignment that changes the afternoon. I am more interested in a coordinated defense than one that merely looks aggressive. Pressure is useful when it creates a difficult answer. It is less useful when it creates the open space the quarterback needed.
Arkansas does not have to turn Clark Lea into an unbeatable strategist to respect the matchup. It simply has to expect Vanderbilt to recognize the same weaknesses everyone else can see.
If a situation has bothered the Razorbacks, the Commodores have a reason to create it again. If Arkansas has become predictable, Vanderbilt has a reason to act on that information.
The response should not require a half of unsuccessful football before the staff accepts what is happening. That is the coaching comparison that interests me.
Which staff recognizes the problem first? Which one has a correction its players can execute? Which one avoids wasting the opportunity while searching? A broad argument about whose philosophy is better will not help Arkansas on third down. A prepared answer might.
NIL and the portal belong in the discussion, but the discussion needs evidence. I am not assigning either staff a spending advantage or declaring one more efficient without verified, comparable information.
The useful questions concern fit. Did the additions address actual needs? Are retained players improving? Can replacements perform the assignment when called upon? Does the scheme give the available personnel a reasonable chance?
Those are fair questions for Arkansas and Vanderbilt. A recognizable transfer does not automatically repair a unit. Keeping a player does not automatically produce development. 
Roster acquisition and weekly coaching eventually have to meet. The players assembled during the offseason need to function together when the game becomes difficult.
That is why I am not sold on an automatic Arkansas coaching edge. I am open to watching the staff earn one. Keep the offense connected. Make Vanderbilt work for its yards.
Have the next answer ready before the first one stops working. Then the coaching advantage will be visible without anyone having to explain it afterward.
