Blaze Berlowitz has been announced as the starting quarterback for the Vanderbilt Commodores in their Week 1 season-opener against Austin Peay, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. He won the starting job over five-star true freshman Jared Curtis, who committed to Vanderbilt as a consensus top-3 recruit in the Class of 2026 according to On3 and 247Sports.

Berlowitz, a 6’3, 200-pound senior from Cushing, Oklahoma, appeared in six games last season, backing up former Commodore and Heisman finalist Diego Pavia. In those six appearances, Berlowitz accumulated 131 yards and a touchdown through the air with a 52.9% completion percentage. He racked up another 81 yards and a score on the ground on just 11 attempts, good for an average of 7.4 yards per carry.
Berlowitz will have very little difficulty in Vanderbilt’s offensive system, as he has played under offensive coordinator Tim Beck for his entire college career — beginning at New Mexico State before transferring to Vanderbilt for the past two seasons. Though he may not have the game-breaking talent of Curtis, he will bring veteran leadership, poise and composure as the Commodores’ signal-caller.
As Thamel reported, Curtis will still be set to take snaps, marking his first time playing at the Division I level. The performance of both Curtis and Berlowitz throughout this game should be telling in regard to future quarterback decisions for head coach Clark Lea.
Berlowitz will lead the Commodores into the season against the Governors on Saturday, September 5, at 6 p.m. CDT at FirstBank Stadium.
