Austin Peay State University Football Pushes SEC Opponent Vanderbilt Before Falling 28-9 – ClarksvilleOnline.com

Nashville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) football team gave Vanderbilt everything it wanted and more, ultimately falling in a 28-9 contest at FirstBank Stadium in the Governors’ 2026 road opener.
Vanderbilt used long, methodical drives to test Austin Peay State University’s depth, controlling the ball for nearly 36 minutes of game time, while APSU controlled the clock for just under 22 minutes after a lightning strike with 2:16 remaining in regulation brought the contest to an early conclusion.
The Governors were unable to enjoy their typical success through the air, with a relentless Vanderbilt pass rush hounding redshirt junior signal-caller throughout the game. The Governors still finished with the highest total yardage number by an FCS opponent against Vanderbilt since 2023.
Austin Peay yielded but did not break on Vanderbilt’s first possession. The Commodores leaned on the running game to get into Austin Peay territory, but settled for a 32-yard field goal after a holding call negated a touchdown run.
The APSU Govs were less methodical on their first drive; Austin Peay State University used a pair of quick strikes to Marvin Sims and an end-around by Nate Garnett Jr. (coupled with a late hit penalty) to put the Govs within striking distance. Redshirt junior Chris Parson took a play-action drop and found Denver Harper for a 24-yard score. The PAT was blocked and returned for a Vanderbilt two-point conversion, but the Govs took a 6-5 lead to the sidelines after the first quarter.
Another lengthy drive yielded three points for the Commodores, again on the leg of Brock Taylor, this time from 37 yards out, to make it 8-6 early in the period.
An Austin Peay punt gave Vanderbilt possession at the 11:34 mark, and this time, the Commodores found the end zone. Senior quarterback Blaze Berlowitz, making his first start for the Commodores, hit Junior Sherrill for 31 yards and Maurie Veney for 20, then called his own number in the red zone on a seven-yard keeper for hosts first touchdown of the night.
The APSU Govs had an answer, though. Redshirt freshman Isaiah Groves went for 16 yards on 2nd-and-22 after Parson was sacked to open the drive. Sims was continually open for chunks of yardage, and the APSU Govs were able to drive far enough into Vanderbilt territory for a 51-yard field goal by Hamilton DiBoyan, his career long and the longest by a Gov since 2024.
An Austin Peay State University defensive stand would send the Govs into the break within striking distance, trailing 15-9.
Austin Peay State University took the opening drive of the second half into Commodore territory, but a 3rd-and-10 gave way to a 4th-and-6 at the 36-yard-line. The APSU Govs elected to chance the fourth down attempt over the 53-yard field goal, but Parson was pressured and ultimately sacked, one of five Commodore sacks on the evening, to end the drive on downs.
The Commodores marched into Austin Peay territory, then went for it on fourth-and-short at the Austin Peay 18-yard-line. The Commodores handed the ball off to Sedrick Alexander, who spun out of a tackle and raced into the end zone. A two-point conversion failed when Justin Wimpye brought Berlowitz down in the backfield to nullify the try.
A punt return for touchdown by the Commodores’ Josiah Broxton brought the scoring to an end early in the fourth quarter. Three punts and one Vanderbilt turnover on downs later, the Govs received the ball with 2:54 to play in regulation. However, a lightning strike in the area led to the game’s suspension, with administrators from both schools agreeing to forgo the final 2:16 on the clock.
Vanderbilt used a punishing run game to in the first half designed to wear down Austin Peay State University’s defensive front. The Commodores ran the ball 22 times for 105 yards in the first half, keeping the APSU Govs on the field for drives of 13, 13 and 9 plays during the opening two quarters.
It’s back to The Fort for the Austin Peay State University football team when they host Morehead State for First Responders Day at Fortera Stadium, September 12th. Kickoff is set for 4:00pm.
