After A Saturday of Uncertainty, Vanderbilt Football At Least Knows One Thing About Its 2026 Team – Sports Illustrated

NASHVILLE—-For seven plays and 75 yards, it all felt like a lie. The Vanderbilt defense that was supposed to be Clark Lea’s most talented was being ripped to shreds in its first public showing.
Austin Peay quarterback Chris Parson had time to make things happen in the downfield passing game, and did. Vanderbilt cornerback Martel Hight cost Vanderbilt 15 yards with a personal foul. Highly-touted sophomore Carson Lawrence got burned for a touchdown to end his first drive as a college starter. 
Lea took significant time out of Saturday’s postgame press conference to declare that he was disappointed with the series because he felt as if Steve Gregory’s defense was “getting organized on the move.” He feels that was embodied by Austin Peay’s early fourth-down conversion in which Vanderbilt was caught subbing defenders on and off the field and was a step behind as a result. 
The idea that Lea even brought that up felt like nitpicking, though. On a Saturday that ended up feeling more like a Vanderbilt loss than a win–despite the 28-9 final score–the performance of Vanderbilt’s defense was the most overwhelmingly-positive takeaway. 
Vanderbilt may not have a stable quarterback situation. It may not have a dynamic wide receiver room. It may not be the SEC’s most talented team. But, it has a defense. A good one that could be more than that. It can enter Delaware week knowing that. 
After its lackluster first series of the game, that defense was dominant. 
Austin Peay’s opening drive accounted for 75 of its 178 total yards on Saturday–which was less yards than its total punting yards from the day. That same offense threw for over 300 yards in its opener against Gardner Webb and has an SEC transfer at quarterback, but Vanderbilt shut it down nonetheless. Austin Peay’s final seven drives ended scoreless, only one went for more than 10 yards and only one took up more than three minutes of game time. 
“We just got back to playing Vanderbilt defense,” Vanderbilt defensive lineman Issa Ouattara–who picked up 1.5 sacks and blocked an extra point–said. “At the end of the day, it wasn't anything crazy. No crazy speech or anything. It was just doing what we've been coached to do and executing.”
Since Ouattara’s 2022 arrival on its campus, Vanderbilt defense has been defined by middling play at best and league-worst play at its floor. Ouattara and company expect that this could be the most productive defensive unit since his 2022 arrival and Lea’s 2020 arrival. The last seven times it took the field Saturday, Vanderbilt’s defense looked like it. 
It got to the quarterback. Its best players were its most frequent performers. It finally got off the field on third down. It dominated up front, only allowed 62 rushing yards on 2.5 yards per carry–with sacks included–and only allowed five plays of 10 yards or more–one of which came through the air. It also looked the part. 
Gregory might be working with the most talented safety room of Lea’s tenure–headlined by two standout veterans in Ricardo Jones and CJ Heard, with toolsy junior Dontae Carter and fall-camp standout Davin Chandler there for depth purposes. Lea told Vandy on SI in June that he feels as strongly about his linebacking core of Bryan Longwell, Nick Rinaldi and Bryce Cowan as any that he’s coached to this point. Vanderbilt clearly has two reliable corners in Martel Hight and Jordan Matthews as well as a reliable pass rusher in Miles Capers, as well. That’s not to mention a defensive line that looks like a defensive line and is headlined by Ouattara–who could be the best player in the unit as a whole. 
Lea and Gregory’s defense is the fourth-most experienced group in the country and returns five starters as well as 12 other members of its three-deep from its 2025 unit. That unit was good, but it was 11th in the SEC in opponent points per game, eighth in sacks and 13th in the league in interceptions. 
Perhaps this one can shave off a few points per game and near the top of the league in the major statistical categories. It will have to make more splash plays than it did Saturday–when it didn’t force a turnover–if it’s going to become Lea’s best defense, but it appears to have a path towards taking on that title. 
Even if it doesn’t, Vanderbilt’s defense is the known variable in this 2026 Vanderbilt football equation. A number of other variables are unknown–at least in regard to whether they’re proficient enough to contribute to a competitive roster–but this one should be steady enough to win in most of Vanderbilt’s 12 regular season games. 
What that looks like each week is yet to be seen, but Vanderbilt’s defense has dominance on its resume already.
