NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Vanderbilt women’s basketball enters the SEC Tournament with a 27-3 record and the No. 2 seed, needing just three wins to claim the program’s first conference tournament title since 2009.
The Commodores received a double bye, setting up an opening round matchup against Ole Miss, one of the three teams that handed Vanderbilt a loss this season.
Vanderbilt has entered the SEC Tournament as the No. 2 seed four times. Two of those appearances ended with a tournament title, including the 2009 championship run.
Vanderbilt has been one of the most balanced offensive teams in the country this season. Three or more Commodores scored in double digits in 27 of their 30 games.
Leading the offense is guard Mikayla Blakes, who has averaged 30 points per game in conference play.
SEC Coach of the Year Shea Ralph addressed the field ahead of the tournament.
“If you are sleeping on us, it’s time to wake up,” Ralph said. “Pay attention because we play the right way. We are a fun team to watch and because it’s just the beginning, we are going to do some special things.”
Blakes echoed that message.
“People can’t overlook us anymore,” Blakes said. “I think the start of the season a lot of people said we wouldn’t be where we are today, and to prove people wrong you have to come here and want to prove people wrong and be a competitor. If you are looking for that, Vanderbilt is the best program.”
No. 2 Vanderbilt tips off against No. 7 Ole Miss at 5 p.m. CT on Friday, March 6.
