The seventeenth-ranked Ole Miss women’s basketball team collected its second-straight victory Friday afternoon, beating No. 5 Vanderbilt, 83-75, for a big win at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham. Ole Miss has had to adjust its home schedule due to the recent aftermath of Winter Storm Fern and won’t be able to play in Oxford until mid Feburary.
In Friday’s win Ole Miss went into the break with a convincing, 44-25, lead after shooting far more efficiently through the first two quarters. Defensively the Rebels forced nearly double the amount of turnovers they had, winning the battle 12-7 going into halftime.
Though Ole Miss was out-scored 50-39 in the final two quarters of the contest, its first half success and ability to close was too much for Vanderbilt to overcome.
Ole Miss led the game for nearly 33 minutes of game time, compared to Vanderbilt’s short-lived lead that lasted a total of three minutes. The Rebels finished shooting the ball over 50 percent from the field, nearly 70 percent from three-point range and 90 percent at the charity stripe. Ole Miss had a little bit more of a sloppy second half, turning the ball over 13 times to reach 20 total on the afternoon.
With another game in the win column, the Rebels advanced to 18-4 overall and 5-2 in the Southeastern Conference. Vanderbilt’s loss marks just its second of the season, after starting the year 20-0.

Senior forward Cotie McMahon was heroic once again, scoring 27 points on a 50 percent shooting clip from the floor. Between the Rebels’ last two wins against Missouri and Vanderbilt, McMahon has scored 60 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, dished out eight assists while connecting on 21-of-39 shots from the field (53 percent).

Other Rebels reached double scoring figures in the big win against Vanderbilt were Christeen Iwuala (18 pts), Latasha Lattimore (12 pts) and Kaitlin Peterson (11 pts). Iwuala also grabbed 14 rebounds to finish with the game’s only double-double.

Ole Miss now finishes its January slate going 5-2, including a 2-1 record against teams ranked within the top five. The program was supposed to play eight games this month, but Monday’s matchup against No. 15 Tennessee was postponed to Feb. 17.

Next up Ole Miss is slated to play Auburn (13-9, 2-6 SEC) Feb. 2, in what was originally scheduled as a home game, at Legacy Arena in Birmingham. Tipoff for Monday’s game between the Rebels and Tigers is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be available to stream on ESPN+.
