For the third year in a row, Vanderbilt will go with an accomplished, one-year graduate transfer at punter. The Commodores have landed a commitment from South Dakota transfer punter Tyler Ebel, who signed with Vandy on Wednesday according to CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer, Matt Zenitz and Cody Nagel.
Ebel was one of the top punters in the FCS at South Dakota, culminating in a strong 2025 season during which he averaged 45.8 yards per punt. The DeForest (Wisc.) product will have one season of eligibility remaining.
Vanderbilt’s last three punters — Matthew Hayball, Jesse Mirco and Nick Haberer — were all Australian and part of the ProKick Australia pipeline. Like Ebel, all three were also transfers. Ebel was a three year starter for South Dakota after redshirting in 2022.
The 2025 season represented Ebel’s best as a Coyote, as he improved his punting average from 42.5 yards in 2023 and 41.7 yards in 2024. Ebel had a 66-yard punt, a season high, against Murray State.
Vandy has a noteworthy connection to South Dakota through assistant offensive line coach Jeff Nady, who served as offensive line coach for the Coyotes in 2023 and 2024. Nady and Ebel overlapped, as did Ebel and outgoing offensive tackle Bryce Henderson, who transferred from South Dakota last offseason for his final year of eligibility.
With Ebel’s addition, Vandy likely will still add a transfer long snapper to replace Durham Harris, who is out of eligibility. Ebel is now Vandy’s seventh transfer addition of the cycle and its second commit of the day alongside 3-star Pittsburgh transfer center Lyndon Cooper.
