Sara Im paces squad at 2-under-par
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s golf sits ninth after 36 holes at the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Charleston, South Carolina. Senior Sara Im leads the Commodores in seventh on the individual leaderboard at 2-under-par.
Vandy opened the day with an even-par first round, good for fourth through 18 holes. The afternoon brought trouble, however, as the Dores slid to ninth after posting a 7-over 291. Big numbers plagued the black and gold in round two with Vanderbilt counting four double bogeys across the second 18.
“I really thought we played fairly decent in the morning round and got off to a good start in the afternoon,” head coach Greg Allen said. “Then we got really sloppy, especially on the greens and on the par 5s which we usually play well.”
Im was steady throughout the day, shooting an even-par 71 in the morning round before carding six birdies in the second trip to post a 2-under 69. Im stands tied for seventh individually, just two strokes out of the top five. Junior Angelina Tolentino is even through two rounds with a 2-under 69 in her opening 18 and a 2-over 73 in the afternoon. Tolentino holed eight birdies on the day and was poised to join Im atop the Commodores’ card before a double on her 16th hole of the afternoon.
Senior Ava Merrill went 1-under in the morning but fell victim to a pair of double bogeys in the afternoon to finish the day 4-over-par overall. Newcomer Olivia Wood bounced back from a tough opening round to shoot a 73 in the second round and sit at 8-over through 36. Elizabeth Rudisill rounds out the Dores’ lineup at 9-over. Playing as an individual, Kathryn Ha posted a 10-over on day one.
“Sara played solid all day which was nice to see,” Allen said, “and, with the exception of a tough hole, AT looked really good. Tomorrow is a big opportunity for us to compete again and try and make a move up the leaderboard.”
Florida leads the Cougar Classic at 9-under. Despite the tough second round, Vanderbilt sits just three shots back of sixth place. The Dores are third in par-3 scoring as a team but rank 17th in par-5 scoring at 4-over.
