Vanderbilt football snatched a comeback victory in a most improbable way against NC State on Sept. 19 at FirstBank Stadium.
NC State quarterback CJ Bailey only needed to kill off the final six seconds of the game clock on fourth down to secure the win.
But the Wolfpack (1-2) were backed up inside their own 10-yard line, and Bailey would have to waste those six seconds in his own end zone against a blitzing Vandy defense.
Still, the Commodores (3-0) could only hope for a once-in-a-lifetime break to somehow win the game.
And they got it.
Bailey inexplicably hesitated, stumbled and fumbled in the end zone after a Miles Capers hit, and cornerback Cayden Daniels recovered the ball with one second left to give Vanderbilt the unbelievable 35-31 win.
With all due respect to Michigan’s controversial Hail Mary win at the buzzer against Western Michigan in Week 1, this play is the moment of the year so far in college football.
Nashville’s football history peaked in January 2000 with the Music City Miracle, the Titans’ lateral-laden kickoff return touchdown by Kevin Dyson to win against Buffalo in the AFC wild-card game en route to the Super Bowl.
The Music City Miracle was not only a great play, but an incredible name.
It would be too easy just to say Music City Miracle, Part 2, even if that is an accurate reflection of the incredible finish.
