NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Arkansas football finally has an SEC victory under Ryan Silverfield. The next challenge is making sure the win over Vanderbilt becomes the beginning of something more than a single breakthrough.
The Razorbacks defeated Vanderbilt 31-21 on Saturday at FirstBank Stadium, improving to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Southeastern Conference play.
But the Razorbacks still have a losing record, and their remaining schedule offers little room to assume that one victory has solved the issues that contributed to their difficult start.
Arkansas’ next opportunity comes Oct. 31, when Missouri visits Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium following the Razorbacks’ bye week. The game will be a chance to carry the momentum from Nashville into a home matchup against another conference opponent.
Missouri presents a different test from Vanderbilt. Arkansas will have two weeks to recover, review film and prepare, but the Razorbacks will also have to prove they can execute against a defense prepared for the changes they made in Nashville.
The Razorbacks still need to demonstrate that they can avoid slow starts, limit costly mistakes and finish drives consistently. Against Vanderbilt, Arkansas fell behind 14-0 before responding. The comeback was an encouraging sign, but relying on rallies every week would make it difficult to string together wins against stronger opponents.
The remaining schedule will test whether the team can address those issues. After Missouri, Arkansas is scheduled to travel to Auburn on Nov. 7, host South Carolina on Nov. 14, visit Texas on Nov. 21 and close the regular season against LSU on Nov. 28.
That stretch will determine how much ground Arkansas can recover in the SEC standings and how the first season under Silverfield is remembered. The Razorbacks do not need to solve every problem immediately, but they need to show that the Vanderbilt performance can be repeated.
The win also provides a foundation for the new coaching staff to build on. Silverfield has emphasized the need for the team to keep improving, and the victory gives players a concrete example of what that progress can produce.
After the game, Silverfield described the victory as part of the program’s larger effort to establish a foundation.
“This is the foundation we’re building here at Arkansas,” Silverfield said. “I’m so darn proud of them.”
The challenge is turning that foundation into consistency. Arkansas cannot change the results of its first six games, but it can determine what the rest of the season looks like. A strong finish would give the program more tangible evidence of progress and a better starting point heading into the offseason.
For now, the Vanderbilt victory has given Arkansas a reason to believe the season can still move in a better direction.
The next step is more difficult: proving they can do it again.
