The Tennessee Vols ended the 2025 regular season on a sour note with a blowout loss at home to the Vanderbilt Commodores. It was Vanderbilt’s first win over Tennessee since 2018.
The Tennessee Vols ended the 2025 regular season on a sour note thanks to a 45-24 loss at home to the Vanderbilt Commodores.
It was Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel’s first loss to Vanderbilt, and it was the Commodores’ first win in the rivalry since 2018.
Former Vols defensive lineman Kahlil McKenzie recently appeared on Rock Media and shared some thoughts on losing to Vanderbilt while discussing the three Tennessee games he has circled this season.
McKenzie played at Tennessee from 2015 to 2017. The Vols lost to Vanderbilt in 2016 and 2017.
“Well, I live in Texas right now, so that game is circled on my calendar,” said McKenzie. “I might try to make it out (to Knoxville for the game) or something, but definitely letting people know that we are the real UT — the only UT. That is one that I have 100 percent circled. Obviously I want to get back at Alabama. But it’s kind of weird, it’s not one that I have circled, if that makes sense.

“I have LSU circled because of the hype behind them. I think that’s one for us, like… I want to just prove ourselves right. We should be in a better place. We should be a better team, all of those things. So that’s why that one is circled for me. And then when we talk about Vandy, bro, I got two [losses] on my record against Vandy. It takes your soul. I don’t care that I wasn’t on the field (for both losses in 2016 and 2017), I don’t care. I hate knowing that I have losses to Vandy to my name.”
I’m sure every Tennessee fan feels the same way as McKenzie.
The Vols will get their chance for revenge this upcoming season when Tennessee travels to Nashville for a matchup against the Commodores.
