Alabama football looks to avoid its second upset of the season when it hosts Vanderbilt on Saturday, Oct. 4.
The Crimson Tide are coming off a huge road win over previously third-ranked Georgia in Week 5, handing the Bulldogs their first home loss in regulation since 2019. Alabama must now immediately shift its focus to its next game and attempt to avoid a hangover.
Not unlike the 2024 season.
Last season, an Alabama team that beat top-ranked Georgia and rose to No. 2 in the ensuing US LBM Coaches Poll, responded by falling to Vanderbilt on the road 40-35. Quarterback Diego Pavia, who had 308 total yards and two touchdowns against the Crimson Tide last season, is back in 2025 and leading the charge for the undefeated team.
Alabama, at the very least, won’t be caught unawares by the Commodores in 2025. ESPN’s “College GameDay” will be on tap for Alabama-Vanderbilt, a game the Crimson Tide have dominated historically. But this season’s Commodores team is much better than in the past, as well, raising the question:
Has Alabama ever lost consecutive games to Vanderbilt? Here’s a look at the series history between Alabama and Vanderbilt.
Yes, Alabama has lost consecutive games against Vanderbilt before, including twice in the modern era of college football (post-1936).
However, it has been 69 years since the Commodores last accomplished that feat. The Commodores last won consecutive matchups over the Crimson Tide in 1955-56: first in Nashville, Tennessee, then again the following season in Birmingham (where Alabama formerly played its biggest games).
Vanderbilt has only won three times since: in 1969, 1984 and, of course, 2024. The Commodores’ win over Alabama last season was their first in 40 years.
Here’s the full list of times Vanderbilt has beaten Alabama in consecutive years, which all date back to some of the earliest years of college football’s existence.
Here’s a look at Alabama’s all-time record against Vanderbilt, including the longest winning streak in the series.
