Notre Dame women’s basketball team advanced to the Elite 8 for the first time since 2019 on Friday, and it was largely due to the monster game by star guard Hannah Hidalgo.
The junior recorded a triple-double with 31-points, 11-rebounds, 10-steals and 7-assists. Hidalgo’s brilliance was recognized on social media, as many went to praise her huge game in leading the Irish to the next round.
It was a bit shocking to see her being left off the Naismith Award finalists, but it’s hard to argue that she’s not one of the best players in the nation. Check out below some of the best social media reactions to Hidalgo’s monster performance against Vanderbilt in the Sweet 16.
Anytime you are mentioned in the same statistic as former Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark, it’s going to be an impressive feat which was the case for Hidalgo. Just two women’s players have ever notched a triple-double, and this pair is it.
A company of one, Hidalgo is the only player in NCAA Tournament history over the last 30-years to have 20-plus points, 8-plus rebounds and 8-plus steals. In fact, she’s done it three times, all this season. Another WOW stat for the star Irish guard.
It’s one thing to get a few steals, it’s entirely another to get 10 in one game, and that’s exactly what Hidalgo did. In doing so, she set the Division I single-season record, with at least one more game to go. What an impressive season for her.
Hidalgo has the chance to go down as one of the greatest Notre Dame women’s basketball players of all-time, and while some of her predecessors have titles, there’s still time for her to get one. Her brilliance shines every time she steps on the court, and we’ll see it again tomorrow.
Parker was the face of women’s basketball for much of her career, and to catch her attention is very impressive. Hidalgo’s game was more than just her stat line, she was the driving force helping the Irish advance to the Elite 8.
Notre Dame’s next opponent is the Huskies, and while they’ll enter the game as big favorites, anything is possible when you have a talent like Hidalgo. Auriemma know’s she won’t be easy to stop, and it’ll be interesting to see how UConn goes about it tomorrow.
