KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Volunteers closed out their regular season with a tough 86-82 loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores, a game in which Tennessee was forced to play from behind the entire night.
From the opening tip, Vanderbilt seized control of the matchup. The Commodores jumped out to a commanding 15-2 lead, immediately putting the Volunteers on their heels. Tennessee struggled to find an offensive rhythm early, while Vanderbilt capitalized on quick scoring runs to build momentum.

Despite attempts to settle in, Tennessee couldn’t close the gap before halftime. The Volunteers entered the locker room trailing 32-22, facing a double-digit deficit and searching for answers heading into the second half.
Tennessee showed much more energy after the break, pushing the pace and attacking the basket with greater urgency. The Volunteers outscored Vanderbilt 60–54 in the second half, mounting several comeback attempts.
However, every time Tennessee seemed to gain momentum, Vanderbilt responded with a timely basket of its own. Those clutch responses prevented the Volunteers from ever taking their first lead of the night, allowing the Commodores to maintain just enough separation to hold on for the 86-82 victory.
Freshman Amari Evans delivered an impressive performance on Senior Night, leading Tennessee with 24 points. Evans provided much of the Volunteers’ offensive spark and kept Tennessee within striking distance throughout the second half.
J.P. Estrella also played a major role in the comeback effort, scoring 20 points, all of which came after halftime. His second-half scoring surge helped fuel Tennessee’s late push.
Meanwhile, Greenville native Ja’Kobi Gillespie added 17 points in what could potentially be his final game at Tennessee’s home arena.
While the regular season ended on a disappointing note, the Volunteers quickly turned their focus to postseason play. Tennessee will next compete in the conference tournament, which begins next Wednesday, where the team will look to regroup and make a run when it matters most.
