C.L. Brown: Kentucky basketball can be successful — win over Vandy showed us how
UK basketball’s showing vs. Vanderbilt is what it needs in March
Coverage during the game:
LEXINGTON — The first question at Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope‘s Thursday news conference centered around his team’s loss to Vanderbilt last month.
“It’s not fun to watch the film,” Pope said.
And why would it be if you were Pope or a member of his program?
The Wildcats lost by 25 points, the third-most lopsided setback they’ve ever had against the Commodores.
Now, Kentucky has an opportunity to return the favor, hosting Vandy this afternoon at Rupp Arena.
“Vandy is a terrific team. Their point guard is electric,” Pope said, referring to sophomore Tyler Tanner, who scored 19 points and dished out a game-high five assists in last month’s meeting. “Duke Miles is back. He was really good (Wednesday) night.”
The biggest difference between UK now as opposed to the team run off the court by Vandy last month, Pope said, is his players are better equipped — in multiple areas.
“I think we changed a lot of the ways we’re just approaching practice,” Pope said. “I think our ability to kind of channel our emotions is better. I think our understanding of what it takes to compete in this league — every single night — is a little bit better. I think our competitive spirit, we’re able to unleash it a little bit better.”
Kentucky (18-10, 9-6 SEC) has a chance to prove that today against a Vanderbilt (22-6, 9-6) club that enters ranked 21st in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll and No. 25 in the AP Top 25.
Courier Journal sports reporter Ryan Black and columnist C.L. Brown are at Rupp Arena and will have live updates throughout the game — here and on X, formerly known as Twitter — and complete coverage after. You can follow them on X at @RyanABlack and @clbrownhoops.
