END OF THE HEAT? The oppressive temperatures that have affected Middle Tennessee for the last few weeks will break on Tuesday, after one more day in the upper 90s. Monday’s high, according to the National Weather Service, will be 97, with a heat index above 100. On Sunday, the 98-degree high produced 130-plus degree temperatures on the turf at Nissan Stadium for a second straight week. “It was hot as shit, and everybody was hot as shit,” Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said after his team beat the Tennessee Titans 24-20. “… I didn’t play a snap and I had to get an IV.” There will be a slight chance of rain and severe weather on Monday, followed by a cooling trend with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s and even, for the lucky, mid-50s for the rest of the week. — Steve Cavendish
PLAYOFF BOUND: Nashville SC became the first Major League Soccer team to clinch a playoff berth this season with a 3-0 victory over the Chicago Fire on Saturday at Geodis Park. Nashville is now one of nine clubs in league history to reach the postseason at least six times in its first seven seasons. This, however, has been a season unlike any other. The Boys in Gold have already set franchise records for wins (17), home wins (12), and points (57). “When you look at a season, the first milestone is you have to earn your way into the MLS playoffs if you want to reach ultimate goals,” coach BJ Callaghan said. “So, for us it’s a great moment to take a pause and say, ‘All right, the body of work was good enough that we were able to hit this milestone.’ Then you get back to work.” Nashville is the only MLS team unbeaten at home in league play this season (12-0-1), and the next match is at home vs. Toronto (7:30 p.m., Saturday). — David Boclair
WINNING WAYS: Vanderbilt’s football team extended its home win streak to 10 games  — the longest in nearly a century — with a 35-31 victory over North Carolina State on Saturday capped by Cayden Daniels’ fumble recovery in the end zone with one second to play as the Wolfpack attempted to take a safety. It was the only time the Commodores (3-0) led. They trailed 17-0 in the first half and 24-7 in the third quarter, were penalized 13 times for 116 yards and committed a season-high three turnovers, the last with time remaining and the offense well within range to attempt a game-tying field goal. The comeback was the largest under current coach Clark Lea. “I’m proud of our program,” Lea said. “This has become a program that finds a way to win. And I think that can’t be undersold in this moment, certainly, there are plenty of teams that find a way out of that game. Yet, our guys found a way in.” The last time Vanderbilt won at least 10 straight home games was 1928-30, when it won 12 in a row. The Commodores’ next home game is Oct. 10 against Ole Miss. — David Boclair
    CULTURE AND COMMUNITY
MOBILIZING COMMUNITIES: On Friday, the American Muslim Advocacy Council (AMAC) hosted registration drives at two local mosques in honor of National Muslim Voter Registration Day, joining 70 other organizations at 100 voting sites across 18 states. Organized by MPower Action, the national event mobilizes voters and drives civic engagement for Muslim communities. “How do you convince people to be engaged, stay engaged and use their voice?” AMAC executive director Sabina Mohyuddin said. “We’re at risk of losing our right to vote, and if people give up on it, we don’t get a clear understanding of where our community stands on issues.” — Eden Turner
