Crisis, Conviction and Culture – Vanderbilt Commodores

After an injury derailed his 2025 campaign, graduate Issa Ouattara's return to play is a testament to his dedication and the support of the Vanderbilt football program
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — On the heels of a historic season that saw the Vanderbilt football team win its most games in program history, the Commodores opened the 2026 season with a 28-9 victory over Austin Peay. And for the first time in 364 days, one of Vandy’s four team captains was running out of the tunnel alongside his teammates in full pads as opposed to street clothes.
“It’s gotten to that time when fall camp is over and you can actually, like, smell football,” graduate Issa Ouattara said with a grin prior to Saturday’s game. “When you hear the band is back on campus and practicing outside, you kind of know, ‘Okay, game day is close.’ I’m just happy to get back out there and have fun, to be back out on the field with my brothers.”
Coming off a 2024 season in which he started 10 of 13 games, producing 31 tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery, Ouattara had high expectations going into 2025. Amid the national attention Vanderbilt had begun to receive after posting its best season in over a decade, Ouattara’s production made him a clear standout. “He’s grown into an NFL player,” head coach Clark Lea said during last year’s training camp.
After a re-aggravated shoulder injury forced Ouattara to miss the team’s 2025 opener against Charleston Southern, he was back on the field for Vandy’s Week 2 road contest at Virginia Tech. But after playing just 15 snaps against the Hokies, Ouattara’s shoulder again took him off the field. He did not return for the remainder of the game.
It was anticipated by both Ouattara and Lea that the defensive tackle would return to play soon, with Lea stating that the setback was more so viewed as wear and tear. “It’s one of those things we’re just going to monitor up until the game,” Lea said. “It’s not something that is season-ending.” But as days turned into weeks, Ouattara remained limited to the sidelines. And on Oct. 21, after missing five more games, Lea announced to the media that Ouattara was undergoing surgery on his shoulder and would be out for the rest of the season.
“It makes it that much harder when you’re trying to get back [on the field] and do everything in your power to play—it takes a lot out of you,” Ouattara said. “It was a weekly thing, just a nagging injury. Every week you wish you would wake up one morning and everything would just be back to normal.”
2025 ultimately became a season to remember for the Dores, as the team finished with a program-best 10 wins, boasted historic offensive numbers and received a multitude of national awards that included a Heisman finalist finish. And despite Ouattara maintaining an influential presence throughout the year as a captain, he could do nothing more than watch as his teammates brought Vanderbilt football to new heights.
“To me, it's harder when, obviously, you want to be out there,” Ouattara said. “And the games where your team maybe isn't performing as well, to me, those are the ones that hurt the most. You feel like, ‘Oh, maybe I could have helped in some way.’ But you just have to kind of flip it in your mind. Once you know you're not going to be the one out there, it's about figuring out how you can make the guy who is going to be out there the best he can be. And from there, playing a supportive role as best as possible.”
Having to play a supportive role was a first for Ouattara in his time at Vanderbilt after seeing the field in each of his first three seasons, but something that he was not unfamiliar with. Growing up with a single mom and two other siblings, he made sure he did what he could to support his family.
“My mom, in many ways, taught me about selflessness and how to care about others more than about yourself,” Ouattara said. “I think that’s a very rare trait, not just in people, but in football programs these days. There’s so much turnover and so many new faces—it’s hard to build something that’s true and genuine. And I feel like that’s the biggest trait I’ve gotten from my mom.”

Ouattara’s selflessness came in many ways, one of which was learning how to cook so his family didn’t have to. His culinary passion is something he has continued to develop while at Vanderbilt.
“I was just trying to put the least amount of stress possible on my mom,” Ouattara said. “[Cooking] is now kind of therapeutic to me. I just turn on some music and start making food. I’m able to do it more in the offseason when we have more time, but I like to have friends over and cook for a group of five, six people. That’s become a way for me to catch up with guys and stay connected with the people around me.”
In the broader picture, Ouattara’s cooking pastime is a microcosm of the relationships he has built with his teammates and coaches. The humbleness, the altruism, the sociability; all are traits that those within the program have used when describing Ouattara. And when his shoulder injury forced him away from football for a year, the team stood by him every step of the way.
“I’m forever thankful to Coach Lea, and just all of our coaches, for supporting me and believing in me when not a lot of people would,” Ouattara said. “This program, it’s an environment that is fostered very meticulously. And it makes you want to contribute to it. We have a saying, ‘Leave it better than you found it.’ And that’s about wanting people that come after you to have a better experience. And just being unselfish in that way, where you’re not just focused on your own development but also how you can help everyone around you grow.”
Leaving it better than you found it has been a mantra echoed by the program throughout Lea’s tenure as head coach. And as someone who has been impactful both on and off the field, Ouattara has certainly lived up to that expectation. Although, he prefers not to be recognized for doing so.
“I honestly don't really care to be remembered in a crazy way or anything,” Ouattara said. “I’ve wanted to be the person for the younger guys that I didn't have at times when I first got to the program, being that type of resource. I just want the guys after me to keep that same mindset and pay it forward when it’s their time.”
As one of the anchors of the Commodore defense, with a potential future in the NFL around the corner, Ouattara has certainly contributed to a legacy that continues to be forged by the current players and coaching staff. But as he enters the final stretch of his collegiate career, it is how both Vanderbilt and his teammates have affected him in return that he reflects on the most.

“I’ve made so many memories, I’ve met so many great people here at Vanderbilt,” Ouattara said. “I was just in a wedding after going to another one this past summer, both former teammates. And that’s just crazy to think of, moments like that where you sit back and reflect on your time. I’m just eternally grateful for the opportunities this university has blessed me with in my time here.
“That’s what was probably the hardest part for me this last year,” he continued. “Once I was out for the season, knowing I would never line up with some of those guys again. You never know when your last moment on the field is. So I’m cherishing that opportunity, just being thankful and attacking every day.”
Vanderbilt returns to FirstBank Stadium on Saturday against Delaware at 3:15 p.m. with coverage available via SEC Network and 102.5 The Game. For more information, updates and exclusive content from the Vanderbilt football team, follow @VandyFB on Instagram, X, Facebook and TikTok.
