According to multiple reports, former Cushing standout Blaze Berlowitz has been named Vanderbilt’s starting quarterback for the season opener against Austin Peay State University.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the news. Thamel also reported that true freshman quarterback Jared Curtis is expected to see action in the game.
Vandy head coach Clark Lea was impressed with Berlowitz throughout preseason camp.
“I think Blaze had an excellent training camp. I mean, he’s — day in, day out — been really consistent, and he does some things tactically with the offensive scheme around him that give us a chance,” Lea said following Saturday’s scrimmage.
Berlowitz is entering his fourth collegiate season. The Cushing native started his college career at New Mexico State before transferring to Vanderbilt ahead of the 2024 season.
Berlowitz has spent the past two seasons serving as Diego Pavia’s backup at Vanderbilt. He has appeared in limited action during his time in Nashville, completing 9-of-17 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. He has also rushed for 11 times with one touchdown.
Vanderbilt will open the season against Austin Peay at 6 p.m. on Sept. 5 at FirstBank Stadium.
Berlowitz was ranked a three-star prospect by On3 at Cushing, and was the No. 85 quarterback and No. 20 player in the state of Oklahoma. He played for head coach Rusty Morgan at Cushing. Morgan played for Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Tim Beck when Beck served as offensive coordinator at Pittsburg State.
