No. 24 Vanderbilt (18-13) entered the second round of the postseason after earning a 4-1 victory over No. 23 Notre Dame in the first round. No. 14-seeded Illinois (24-7) defeated Yale 4-0 on their home court to secure its second-round berth. Both matches were played at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Illinois, with the Fighting Illini having earned hosting privileges for the first two rounds.
The Commodores now played on the Illinois courts before many Fighting Illini fans and were ultimately swept in the match, unable to win a single set in doubles or singles.
Illinois came out strong right away, with William Mroz and Tyler Bowers beating Pablo Martinez Gomez and Callum Markowitz 6-4. Zach Viiala and David Bakonyi followed suit, defeating Danil Panarin and Jack Satterfield 6-3 to secure the doubles point. With doubles decided, Vanderbilt’s No. 13 nationally ranked duo of HoYoung Roh and Nathan Cox’s match was left unfinished. The pairing had a 6-5 lead on Illinois’ Kenta Miyoshi and Gabriel Debru.
The story was no different in singles, with No. 16 Miyoshi defeating Roh in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. No. 96 Mroz bested Panarin 6-1, 6-4, extending the Illinois advantage to 3-0. The Fighting Illini clinched the match with Jeremy Zhang notching a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Donghyun Hwang.
Three singles matches were left unfinished, with Debru leading Martinez Gomez, 6-4, 6-6 and Adam Jilly holding a 7-5, 5-5 advantage over Cox. Satterfield’s match against Hayden Jones was also halted, with Jones winning the first set 6-4 but Satterfield leading the second 5-4.
Head coach Scott Brown, who has now reached the NCAA Tournament in two of his three seasons on West End, ended this one with much to be satisfied with. Despite the season-ending loss, the 2025-26 campaign proved to be quite successful for the Black and Gold. Vanderbilt achieved its first NCAA Tournament win since 2019 and secured 18 total wins, the most since recording 19 in 2018.
Vanderbilt’s young roster provides plenty of optimism heading into the fall season, which begins in September.
