Consensus national coach of the year ready to build on historic women’s basketball season and help empower Vanderbilt as the premier destination for women’s collegiate sports
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Reinvigorating Memorial Magic and lifting a proud program to unprecedented heights was just the beginning for Vanderbilt women’s basketball head coach Shea Ralph, who has agreed to a contract extension with the university. Vice Chancellor for Athletics and University Affairs and Athletic Director Candice Storey Lee announced the extension for the newly minted AP, Naismith, USBWA and WBCA Coach of the Year.
“Vanderbilt is built on bringing together the best people and brightest minds, and Shea Ralph exemplifies both,” Lee said. “Five years ago, Shea was the first head coach hired after the launch of Vandy United, signaling our commitment to compete at the highest level across all programs. She has delivered on that vision and is the right leader to keep elevating our women’s basketball program while inspiring our broader community as we set the standard for women’s athletics. Her well-deserved recognition only reinforces what we see every day—she makes teams better, empowers women and brings people together.”
In just five seasons, Ralph has restored Vanderbilt to a place among the elite in women’s college basketball and guided the Commodores to record-breaking achievements. This past season, en route to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 17 years, Vanderbilt set a program record with 13 SEC victories, recorded the third-best total in program history with 29 total victories and went undefeated at home for the first time. And under Ralph, Memorial Gymnasium has again become a community hub around women’s basketball games. Average attendance this past season was up nearly 100 percent over the last full season before Ralph arrived.
“Shea Ralph exemplifies our commitment across the university to attract the most talented people who fit our culture and put them in an environment where they can succeed,” Chancellor Daniel Diermeier said. “By forging a collaborative culture dedicated to growth on and off the court, Shea has helped our student-athletes realize the full heights of their potential, galvanized our One Vanderbilt community and demonstrated to a national audience what is possible here. I look forward to seeing her lead our program forward.”
The historic 2025–26 season built on a foundation Ralph began laying from the moment she was announced as head coach in 2021. She led the Commodores back to the postseason in her first season in charge and has guided her team to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, ending a 10-year drought. In addition to recruiting elite student-athletes to play a collaborative style built on trust and accountability, she has fostered an environment that allows each individual to grow. This past season, sophomore Mikayla Blakes became the program’s first SEC Player of the Year in 24 years and was recognized as a consensus All-American, while Aubrey Galvan was honored as SEC Freshman of the Year. Along with Ralph’s SEC honor, Vanderbilt became just the fourth school to sweep SEC Player, Coach and Freshman of the Year. Additionally, Blakes is a finalist for the Honda and Wooden Awards, recognizing the nation’s preeminent player.

And as much growth as we’ve had, the best part of being at Vanderbilt is I still feel that way every day. And with an administration and supporters eager to invest in women, I’m excited about the opportunity ahead of us.”
Ralph’s extension follows soon after Vanderbilt launched Anchored for Her as part of the Vandy United and Dare to Grow campaigns, efforts that have already delivered world-class facilities like the Huber Center for men’s and women’s basketball. With an initial goal of $50 million, Anchored for Her seeks to cement Vanderbilt’s place as the premier destination for women’s sports through wide-ranging investment in people, programs and facilities.
