Over a 3-day stretch, basketball fans flocked to the Sooner State to watch eight schools compete in the Round of 64 and 32 for the opening games of March Madness.
Vanderbilt fans started their day March 20 enjoying breakfast around the downtown areas of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. From there, fans, the Vanderbilt Anchor of Sound band and the cheerleaders lined up outside of the Sheraton Hotel to send the players off to Paycom Center in preparation for the game.
Fans then made their way over to watch the Vanderbilt Commodores take down the McNeese State Cowboys. The Commodores had a slow start, but an impressive 26-point performance from Tyler Tanner, as well as a combined 37 points between Duke Miles, Tyler Nickel and Devin McGlockton put the Commodores ahead by 10 for a final score of 78-68.
With almost two full days of free time, fans spent their days enjoying Oklahoma City with visits to the Botanical Gardens, Bricktown, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. As the weekend approached, more Vandy fans made their way to the city and showed up once again for the players to walk out at the hotel.
As the game approached, it became evident that beating Nebraska was going to be a two-front fight: beating the team on the court and beating the noise level coming from the Nebraska fans. Vanderbilt trailed for much of the game, having its largest lead of the day at 5 points. Still, Nebraska never pulled away, setting up the perfect storm for a dramatic final 2 minutes. With a clutch layup from Nebraska’s Braden Frager, Nebraska took the lead with 2.2 seconds left on the clock. After a timeout from Mark Byington, the last play of the game had to be a déjà vu heartbreaker for Vanderbilt fans, where Tyler Tanner rimmed out a 49-foot 3-point jumper, resulting in a heartbreaking loss for the Commodores.
