Middle Tennessee, Austin Peay visit No. 13 Vanderbilt as Commodores return from ITA National Team Indoor Championship
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 13 Vanderbilt women’s tennis takes to the court for a home doubleheader against Middle Tennessee and Austin Peay on Friday at the Lummis Tennis Center.
The Commodores are less than a week removed from competing at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship hosted by Illinois, where the black and gold rounded out their road trip with a 4-0 win over the Fighting Illini. Vanderbilt (5-2) began that match securing their second doubles point of the weekend after doing so against Texas. With singles wins from freshman Erin Pearce and No. 40 ranked senior Bridget Stammel, sophomore Sophia Webster clinched the match at No. 5 singles in a 7-6 (3), 6-2 takedown of Illinois’ Elizabeth Isyanov. Webster remains unbeaten in dual match singles play for the Dores.
“We played three really good matches in three days last weekend, and that’s the most intense stretch and volume of tennis we’ve had so far this spring,” head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “It’s been a short week of practice where we’ve tried to be smart about volume and how much we’re doing before having to play two more matches on Friday.”
After falling one spot to No. 13 in this week’s ITA team rankings, Vanderbilt looks to build from its indoor tournament with a Friday doubleheader against Middle Tennessee (1-3) and Austin Peay (4-1). The Commodores’ morning match against the Blue Raiders is the ninth installment of the regional matchup, with Vandy holding an 8-0 record in the series. The black and gold brought home a 6-1 victory last season. Middle Tennessee is 1-1 on the road so far, falling 4-3 to Lipscomb in its last match.
Austin Peay is set to follow Friday afternoon, with the Governors coming to Nashville on a three match win streak, securing victories over Southern Indiana, Murray State and Belmont. It is just the third all-time meeting between the two programs. Vanderbilt collected wins in the previous two meetings, most recently a 6-1 result in 2024. Austin Peay’s lone defeat of the season came on Jan. 19, 5-2, to Furman.
“National team indoors shows everyone where they stack up against the best teams in the country, and we were right there with them; the margins are so small,” Tsoubanos said. “I look forward to getting another run at both of [Texas A&M and Texas] in just a few weeks, but our focus now is on finishing out our nonconference schedule starting with MTSU tomorrow morning.”
Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee are set to square off at 10:30 a.m., with the Dores’ matchup against Austin Peay following at 4 p.m. Streaming will be available online with live stats accessible via IonCourt.
