The only thing guaranteed about the rest of the SEC women’s basketball season is that nothing is guaranteed.
South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Texas sit at the top of the standings, but all have a handful of ranked matchups to end the regular season. The Gamecocks have to take care of business in Baton Rouge and the Longhorns and Commodores face each other next. LSU is still in the title race, but it’ll take snapping the 17-game losing streak to the Gamecocks to keep it that way.
But one thing is clear at this point: Vanderbilt is still firmly in the race for the regular-season title, and it has established itself as one of the best programs in the SEC.
Rankings based on games as of Feb. 10.
Last week: 1
What to know: The Gamecocks notched not one, but two, 43-point wins last week going into the highly-anticipated game at LSU on Valentine’s Day. ESPN couldn’t have picked a better day for the matchup that’s become quite the heated rivalry between fans.
Last week: 2
What to know: If Rori Harmon gives you the kind of devilish grin she had plastered on her face during the third quarter against LSU after yet another steal… just know it’s wraps.
Last week: 5
What to know: Oklahoma barely stood a chance against Mikayla Blakes, but the Sooners had absolutely no shot against Blakes plus an Aubrey Galvan legacy game of 30 points on 66.7% shooting.
Last week: 3
What to know: The Tigers‘ offense ran into the brick wall that is Texas’ defense, which held them to 20 fewer points than their average in SEC games. It was a long day for LSU getting terrorized by Harmon.
Last week: 4
What to know: Coach Yo said they were robbed, I say don’t miss 10 free throws and shoot 22% from 3-point range.
Last week: 7
What to know: The Tide upset Ole Miss and then turned around and lost to Texas A&M, which is actually not all that surprising if you’re paying attention.
Last week: 6
What to know: Losses don’t get much uglier than whatever the Lady Vols did in Columbia, South Carolina, on Feb. 8. In fact, a loss has never been uglier for Tennessee in program history.
Last week: 8
What to know: Dani Carnegie should teach classes on how to bait opponents into fouling 3-point shooters. Or maybe that’s just a problem unique to Tennessee.
Last week: 9
What to know: If anyone can make sense of what Kenny Brooks was whining about after the Texas game, please let me know. Also, someone let him know he coaches in the SEC, the most physical conference in the country.
Last week: 10
What to know: The Sooners couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn shooting from 3-point range at Vanderbilt, and your star freshman going 0-for-11 from deep is an easy recipe for a loss.
Last week: 12
What to know: Missouri has officially surpassed its SEC win count from the last two seasons, and that deserves some recognition. They might even have a couple wins left on the schedule.
Last week: 11
What to know: Hey, at least Mississippi State isn’t the only team that lost to South Carolina by 43 points last week.
Last week: 14
What to know: The Gators won two games in a row for the first time since SEC play started, and that’s worth something. I don’t know what, but something, for sure.
Last week: 15
What to know: The Aggies defense got the job done to upset Alabama – specifically a Lauren Ware block on what could have been a game-tying 3-pointer to go to overtime.
Last week: 13
What to know: Auburn has lost six straight games, but things are looking up with only one more ranked matchup on the season.
Last week: 16
What to know: Let’s all remember, Arkansas got rid of Mike Neighbors for this.
