The day’s major news events and late-breaking stories are presented by the news team, along with the latest weather, sports coverage, and traffic.
The Oklahoma Sooners led by double digits for more than half the game and survived a frantic finish to beat No. 15 Vanderbilt Commodores 92–91 on Saturday in Nashville, snapping a nine-game losing streak and handing the Commodores just their second home loss of the season.
The Sooners built a 21-point second-half lead and were still up 82–63 with 3:38 remaining before turnovers and missed free throws fueled a dramatic Vanderbilt rally. Oklahoma ultimately sealed it at the line, as Xzayvier Brown the SEC’s top free-throw shooter entering the game knocked down two foul shots with 3.4 seconds left to give OU a four-point cushion.
Vanderbilt’s Tyler Tanner cut the margin to two with a 35-foot three with 5.2 seconds remaining, then banked in another triple at the final horn to make it a one-point game, but Oklahoma escaped with the win.
“It wasn’t easy,” radio voice and News 9 Sports Director Toby Rowland said postgame. “A 21-point lead whittled all the way down to one at the final buzzer, but the Sooners hang on to snap a nine-game losing streak on the road.”
The victory marked Oklahoma’s first road win over an AP Top-15 opponent since a double-overtime win at No. 14 West Virginia on Feb. 13, 2021. It was also the first time in at least the past 27 seasons that the Sooners beat a ranked team on the road without ever trailing.
Oklahoma (12–12, 2–9 SEC) never fell behind, racing to early leads of 11–2 and 26–10 as Tae Davis scored nine of OU’s first 11 points and 14 of its first 18. Vanderbilt answered with a 17–4 run to pull within three midway through the first half, but the Sooners closed strong and took a 48–34 halftime lead their largest SEC halftime advantage of the season and Vanderbilt’s first halftime deficit at home all year.
OU opened the second half with a 13–6 surge to push the lead to 61–40. Brown hit three-pointers on the Sooners’ first two possessions after the break, and Nijel Pack added another moments later. Oklahoma’s lead hovered between 15 and 21 points until the final minutes.
All five Oklahoma starters scored in double figures, and Dayton Forsythe joined them off the bench.
Jadon Jones added eight points off the bench.
Oklahoma shot 53.4% from the field and scored 40 points in the paint its highest total in SEC play helping offset 14 turnovers that Vanderbilt converted into 19 points.
Brown’s performance marked his second straight 20-point game and his sixth 20-point outing in SEC play. He has now scored at least 13 points in 14 of the last 15 games. Pack went 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, giving him 15 games this season with at least three made threes.
Tanner led all scorers with a career-high 37 points, going 14-for-18 at the free-throw line while also dishing out nine assists and collecting five steals. Vanderbilt (19–4, 6–4) outscored Oklahoma 22–8 over the final 2:27 but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Oklahoma returns home next weekend to host Georgia, carrying momentum from a road win that had been a long time coming.
