Vanderbilt’s scheduled game at Ole Miss, which was slated for 7:30 Central in Oxford, Miss., has been changed to a Saturday tipoff at 5 Central in Memorial Gymnasium.
The two teams were set to play in Nashville on March 4, but the dates for the home-and-home series have been flipped. All tickets purchased for the original game will be valid for the one this upcoming Saturday.
Ole Miss’s campus is closed until February 8, with the Sandy and John Black Pavilion (the Rebels’ basketball arena) being used as a warming center during mass power outages in the area.
Vanderbilt’s campus has been open, but the city had over 100,000 residents without power earlier in the week. That included many areas near campus. Commodore coach Mark Byington recently made national headlines for sleeping in the Huber Center--Vanderbilt’s basketball practice facility–earlier this week.
Vanderbilt (18-3, 5-3 Southeastern Conference) enters on a two-game winning streak, with an 88-56 win at Mississippi State last Saturday followed by Tuesday’s 80-55 rout of Kentucky in Nashville. The Commodores are 3-0 in neutral-site games, having beaten Western Kentucky, VCU and Saint Mary’s to win the Battle 4 Atlantis in November.
The Rebels (11-9, 3-4) are on a two-game slide after Saturday’s 72-63 loss at Kentucky, which was preceded by a 78-66 home loss to Auburn. Prior to that, Ole Miss had a three-game winning streak with a home win over Missouri followed by victories at Mississippi State and Georgia. They’re 1-2 in neutral-site games, with a win over Southern Miss and losses to Iowa and Utah.
Vanderbilt beat Ole Miss, 77-72, in the lone meeting between the teams (which happened in Nashville) last season. Ole Miss beat Vanderbilt by a 69-56 score in Oxford the previous season.
On Tuesday, the league office announced that the Ole Miss-Vanderbilt women’s game, which was scheduled to be played in Oxford, was moved to 2 Central in Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
The Legacy Arena website describes the venue as “… a 17,000-capacity arena hosting national and international touring concerts, productions, and various sporting events each year. Legacy Arena is also the home venue for the NBA G-League Birmingham Squadron. A $125M modernization of Legacy Arena was completed in November of 2021.”
The arena has already hosted SEC basketball this season, with Houston beating Auburn, 73-72, on Nov. 16.
Formerly known as the “Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center,” the same building hosted the SEC tournament between 1978-85.
