Following a dominant 3-0 start to its spring season, Vanderbilt Men’s Tennis faced its two biggest tests of 2026: North Carolina and No. 1 Wake Forest. These two matches presented head coach Scott Brown and his players with their first taste of adversity this season.
Vanderbilt opened the ITA Kickoff Weekend with a comeback victory over UNC Jan. 23. The Commodores fell behind quickly in doubles, with their No. 2 team of Jack Satterfield and Danil Panarin losing 6-2. The No. 3 team for the Black and Gold, Nathan Cox and Hugo Coquelin, won 6-3 to even the score before the No. 1 pair of Pablo Martinez Gomez and Hoyoung Roh fell 6-4.
With Vanderbilt down 1-0 after doubles, Brown turned to his singles players to mount a comeback. Panarin and Cox took care of business, with Panarin rolling to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles and Cox securing a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5. Then, No. 62-ranked Martinez Gomez followed by earning a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 spot. However, Satterfield at No. 4 singles and Coquelin at No. 6 singles suffered 6-3, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-2 defeats, respectively.
At 3-3, it all came down to the No. 2 singles matchup between Roh and UNC’s No. 52 ranked Roan Jones. Jones secured the first set 6-3, while Roh fought back for a 6-3 victory of his own in the second set. A hard-fought third set battle ended with Roh notching a decisive 6-4 win. It was the first career ranked win for the freshman who has been impressive through the first three matches.
Vanderbilt ended its 5-0 all-time losing streak against the Tar Heels with this resounding 4-3 victory.
“The players left everything on the court,” Brown said. “Both teams were supporting their teammates, and it was just a really good atmosphere to be a part of. This was what we love the most about college tennis.”
Vanderbilt entered Saturday’s match against the best team in the nation and defending National Champions Wake Forest with a four-match win streak. The winner of the matchup would earn a qualifying spot at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
Wake Forest jumped out to an early lead, dominating with 6-1 victories at the No. 1 and No.3 doubles spots. The No. 2 pair of Satterfield and Panarin were down 5-2 when the Demon Deacons clinched a doubles triumph.
Satterfield finished first in singles, losing 6-2, 6-2 to Mees Rottgering, followed by Panarin who suffered a 7-5, 6-3 defeat to No. 15-ranked Luca Pow. Wake Forest just needed one more win to close the match, which it received at No. 6 singles from Joaquin Guilleme, who defeated Coquelin 7-6 (2), 6-1.
Martinez Gomez and Roh were in the middle of their second sets when the match concluded. While Martinez Gomez was on the brink of defeat 7-6 (5), 5-3, Roh capped off his phenomenal weekend by winning his first set 7-6 (6). He trailed the second set 3-2 upon the match’s completion. The Anyang, South Korea, native was the only Commodore to pick up a set against Wake Forest.
Vanderbilt looks to bounce back as it hosts Middle Tennessee Jan. 29, at 5 p.m. CST.
