After suffering its first loss of the season to No. 1 Wake Forest, Vanderbilt Men’s Tennis looked to bounce back in a home matchup against Middle Tennessee Thursday, Jan. 29.
Just like Vanderbilt’s prior two matches in the ITA Kickoff Weekend, the Commodores faced significant adversity in doubles competition. Although No. 42 duo of Danil Panarin and Jack Satterfield dominated Birtan Duran and Antoine Mayoral 6-0, the Commodores failed to capitalize on an early lead. Middle Tennessee’s No. 18 pair of Ondrei Horak and Karim Al-Amin sank Pablo Martinez Gomez and Hoyoung Roh in a close 7-5 match. With the teams knotted up at one game apiece, the Blue Raiders’ Eric Crivei and Jonasz Dziopak bested Nathan Cox and Callum Markowitz 6-3 to earn the doubles point.
Vanderbilt entered singles play needing to win four out of the six matches to secure the victory. Cox broke through first, defeating Mayoral 6-1, 6-4, while Satterfield followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Crivei. Roh continued the Black and Gold’s momentum, beating Al-Amin 7-5, 6-2 to put Vanderbilt up 3-1. Panarin secured the victory for the Commodores, staving off Dziopak to win 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. In the remaining matches, Horak and Freddy Murray each collected points for the Blue Raiders, beating No. 62 Martinez Gomez 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 and Markowitz 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10), respectively, to finalize Vanderbilt’s victory at 4-3.
“I was really impressed with how our guys responded on all five courts after losing that doubles point,” head coach Scott Brown said. “We went up 3-1 quickly, MTSU bit back and it was just college tennis from there: momentum shifts, intensity, everything. I think we could have done better at closing some of those singles matches out, but I’m still super proud of the guys.”
The Commodores will head to Charlottesville to face the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. CST.
